Questions.
Will this match what my CFI teaches?
Yes. The phraseology follows the FAA's Aeronautical
Information Manual and the Pilot/Controller Glossary, the same standard
your CFI teaches from.
Is it VFR only?
No. It starts with VFR radio work: taxi, tower and pattern
calls, flight following. Then it runs through holding patterns, expect
further clearance times, and IFR arrival clearances.
Can I practice at my own airport?
Mostly, yes. The live exercises (taxi, pattern work, live
radio scenarios) run at nearly any real US airport, including yours. The
structured curriculum lessons are set at a fixed set of training fields, so
every lesson is grounded in real charts.
Do I need my medical or student certificate to start?
No. There's no prerequisite at all. Plenty of people start
before their first lesson.
I've never flown. Is this over my head?
No. It starts at the phonetic alphabet and assumes nothing.
If your first lesson is still ahead of you, that's the best time to
start.
How does the grading work?
Your transmission is transcribed with an aviation-tuned speech
model, then checked element by element against a fixed rubric for that call.
You see a verdict on each piece, your exact words, and the model call next
to them.
Are these real airports?
Yes. Diagrams and taxi routes come from real airport geometry,
and clearances are generated on it. The airport on this page is the real
Reid Hillview (KRHV).
Does it replace my CFI?
No. It replaces the part where you rehearse in the car on the
way to the airport and hope the right words come out. The flying is still
your CFI's job.
What can I run it on?
iPhone and iPad, on the App Store now. Android is on the
roadmap.
Can my CFI see how I'm doing?
Not yet. Today your progress and graded attempts live in the
app, so you can show them directly. School tools come with the school
plans.
